Pros and cons of gastric bypass surgery
There are many benefits to gastric bypass surgery, particularly to those who suffer from other diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. The surgery can usually improve or eliminate symptoms of these diseases. It can also eliminate or lessen symptoms of osteoarthritis, gastric reflux and infertility. Of course, patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery experience great weight loss, when coupled with a healthy diet and exercise routine, maintaining an average of 65 to 70 percent of excess weight loss at five years after surgery.
The downside to gastric bypass surgery is that there are many complications associated with the procedure. Including leakage, pulmonary embolism, bleeding, infection, hernia and even death. If the patient does not follow a strict diet and exercise regiment, he/she may regain the weight they have lost. Patients may also experience more frequent bowel movements.
