Although gastric bypass surgery is elective, meaning it is a surgery you choose to have, not one that is necessitated, it may be covered by your insurance. In fact, many health insurance companies will pay for a portion of and, in some cases, the entire cost of gastric bypass surgery. Some insurance companies do not, however, and it is important to understand your insurance benefits before electing to undergo gastric bypass surgery.
Insurance companies that do cover the gastric bypass surgery require certain paperwork before you can be cleared for the procedure and you must meet certain criteria. A partial typical list of may include:
- A physical exam and complete medical history.
- Documentation of at least two or more failed attempts to lose weight through other methods such as diets and medication. Some insurance companies may require that you tried and failed to lose weight through a medically supervised diet.
- Consultation with a surgeon who performs gastric bypass procedures.
- A Psychological evaluation.
- Patient consent.
